Momma Never Told Me

 Catching a Breeze from Bernice

Daylight time in a cemetery is still a spooky place. Yesterday, I walked for exercise and to photograph the roots of some of those massive trees that seem to grow in cemeteries --- maybe from the past fertilizer of rich lives?

Anyway, I stopped between two of those huge leafy friends of the earth and humankind, when I was struck by how cool it was at that very spot! Tales have been told about how some houses have chilly-cold spots and it's all been attributed to ghosts walking around trying to catch a glimpse of us naked. Well, this spot had a strong wind swishing around the giant tree trunks!

I stood between them and raised my arms to enjoy the breeze on a hot summer day. By the time it took to dry my armpits, I had noticed the oldest gravestone in the area. Bernice had died in 1915 at the young age of 26! "Gone but not forgotten" was fading from her marker and Bernice was not having any of that. She wanted to make sure I knew she was still around!

Hello, Bernice, and thanks for the cool down.

Friday's Five Questions for the Curious

1. Will the Dixie Chicks sing at Jenna Bush's wedding?

2. I saw a list of the top five bachelors and poor George Clooney was the oldest! He missed his chance while he was in my town making a movie, right?

3. There are nine guns for every ten people in the U.S.? I must be the one without, but please don't tell the bad guys!

4. For attacking her lover's girlfriend, while wearing a dirty diaper, ex-astronaut Lisa Nowak is pleading insanity. Duh.......... ya think?

5. Something is very wrong in our world when a dog can inherit 12 million dollars and people are starving on the street and Katrina victims still need homes. Along with the rest of us, Leona Helmsley, I hope God asks you why?

Good-bye, sweaty August. Have a safe and happy Labor Day weekend, Streamers! ~~~ Hugs, Rita B

 Happy Birthday, Bro!

My brother won't get to read this because he's not into computers like my sisters and me. That's a shame since it's such a great way to stay in touch with family and friends.

My brother was born 21 months after me so we were very close growing up. He was always small which caused him to acquire the nickname "Tiny." That meant I spent most of my early years protecting him from bullies. Of course, he had a way of riling saints, but we both could be terrors! His specialty was setting off our father and in those days it took not just me, but all of my sisters and my mother, to help my brother survive the inevitable tornado. In spite of him being a troublemaker we siblings shared some good times growing up together.

Somehow he lived through that rambunctious childhood and was able to keep his wry humor. It still shines through whenever I get to see or talk to him --- which is seldom because he's always working --- because after marrying a much younger crazy woman, he stays on the road! I think that keeps them both happier.

So have a very Happy Birthday, brother Oliver!

 Two Year Anniversary of Katrina

Prayer for Katrina Survivors

Dear Lord,
Your promises are true. They never fail.
You promised never to leave nor forsake us
And when Katrina struck with all her might
And our forts were too weak for her gusts,
You were there.
When she birthed torrents of rain
Turning cities into ponds overnight,
You were there.
When our bones grew frail from fear
As families and friends were torn apart
You were there.

You promised to deliver us from trouble
And as the waters rose all around us
Drowning our hedges, havens, and homes
You made a way through our sea
And led us safely to dry ground.

You promised all things, without exception,
Would work together for our good.
Thank you for using Katrina to give us a new beginning.
You have preserved our lives for a purpose
And will replenish all that we've lost.
Our future will be better than our past.

Thank you for the promise of eternity in heaven,
For those who lost their lives
In the wake of Katrina
Shall awake in glory
Never to lose it again!
