Momma Never Told Me

Monday's Silly Question: Fired or Escaped?

Have you ever gotten fired?

I never did get fired, but I sure exited a few jobs that weren't going right! Sometimes you just know when it's time to leave --- because of that little nagging feeling in your brain or that loud scream of boredom in your ear.

After graduation from high school, I worked at a upscale ladies clothing store in Macon, Georgia. Everyone else working there was very old and the clothing they stocked was very matronly. The days were slow and, man, was it totally boring! I saw early that my career in the retail world wasn't going to make me happy, so I decided to join the Navy to experience a real adventure!

Fired? No. Pink-slipped? Maybe once. Bored to tears at a job? Oh, yes. Burned out? Definitely!

"I'm going to mix business with pleasure," the boss said, "You're fired!

In a way, though, I'll be sorry to lose you cause you've been like a child to me: insolent, surly, and unappreciative."

 Friday's Five: Real Stuff 4 U

1. Those nine firefighters who died while trying to put out a fire in Charleston are heroes. They are the bravest people I can think of, next to the military, and many firefighters were in the military before they took the job of saving people and property from fire. May God bless their families and friends in this terrible time of loss!

2. While I've been recovering from surgery, I got hooked on A & E's City Confidential. It's a neat show, narrated by that mellow-voiced Paul Winfield, who highlights a town and a notorious crime that happened in its past. The first half of the show tells about how the town got started --- the other day it was Newport, RI, and today it was a spot in Utah called Milford --- followed by the story about whatever scandal happened there. Some interesting stuff, so check it out!

3. A town close to us had an outbreak of food poisoning at one of their seafood restaurants. An older lady even died within a week of the incident. What came out during the investigation was that two immigrant workers killed a goat and dressed it in the kitchen of that fish restaurant! Gag!!! We never know what happens after hours, do we, Streamers? Unless there are hidden cameras......

4. The oldest man in the world right now is a 111 year old from Japan. Mr. Tomoji Tanabe says he drinks milk, no alcohol or smoking, and keeps a diary! (Does a blog count as a diary?) The oldest woman is 114 year old Yone Minagawa also from Japan. Experts attribute the longevity to the Japanese diet rich in vegetables and fish! Too bad for me, being Japanese would help me reach my goal of living to be 120.

5. Are you 4real? That's the name a New Zealand couple wants to name their newborn son. The government is considering the request, but has rules against naming someone a number! That means other people have wanted to do it before OR there wouldn't be a law, right? Hopefully, the baby boy will end up with a "real" name.

Have a great summer weekend, Streamers! ~~~ Hugs, Rita B

 Running Those Orange Lights

Okay, I'll admit to running a yellow light that might be almost red, but the other day two or three more cars followed right behind me! What's up with that? Are they not even looking at the light or do they feel they deserve to come on through no matter what? I'm always looking around expecting to get caught by the fuzz --- these just flew through without a care in the world.

I once read that IF you peek up at the light when you're running a yellow/red light then it's all about competition to you. You're trying to beat the light or the system! But if you really feel that you're too close to make a safe stop and continue on through the light without looking, then you're doing it the way it's supposed to be done.

The fresh "Ten Commandments of Driving" that the Vatican released Tuesday goes a long way to encourage people to consider how serious life is behind the wheel of a car. We all need to be more careful. I heard someone say that the new rules didn't go far enough as it needed to add "Thou shalt not talk on thou cellphone while driving!"

Happy Summer driving to you! ~~~ Hugs, Rita B

 Smile for the Hidden Cameras

I used to fear surveilance cameras photographing me as I went about my life, but no more! "Big Brother" now can film all it wants and I am grateful. They can put them everywhere as far as I'm concerned.

Two recent horrible crimes were solved quickly because the killer and attacker were caught on film. Good quality film and cameras have made it easier to see the person's face and track them down within a few days. Criminals who are caught and hopefully behind bars is the best outcome.

A twisted man abducted a young woman from the parking lot of a Target and killed her during a beautiful summer day two weeks ago. None of us would dream of that hellish event happening to us or someone we love! But it did happen and, lucky for the rest of us, the man following the nineteen year-old woman to the parking lot was identified or he would be doing it again, somewhere else. Maybe he has already done it since people disappear all the time.

Another vicious crime was one of an older man being beaten by a bat by some young male punk! I could hardly watch the film, but the attacker's face was right there in front of the camera and he was also found quickly.

So film away, all you good-quality hidden cameras, because if something bad happens to me, I want it captured on video and the evil doers punished to the max!
