Momma Never Told Me

 Black-Eyed Pea Luck

Every girl raised in the south, or GRITS, knows that black-eyed peas are served on New Year's Day!

The menu varies from place to place, but we serve corn muffins, some kind of greens, and black-eyed peas with a little pork for seasoning. The whole idea is to eat poorly on the first day of the year and it will bring you good luck for the rest of the 364 days! Also, our tradition is that you have to eat ALL the black-eyed peas you put on your plate or you'll have bad luck. So only take the peas you know you'll eat, please!

Luckily for me I like black-eyed peas. May be both be blessed with good luck in this New Year ahead!

 Good-Bye to James Brown

A sad good-bye to the Godfather of Soul! When I first started listening to music, James Brown was there and continued to this day. So I grew up dancing to his funky soul music. Papa's got a brand new bag now! He was a one-of-a-kind original wild man and he will be missed.

Later, it was reported that his last words were: "Yeeeeeeeeeowwww, I don't feel so good!!!"

Thanks for the fantastic music, James!

 Fudge Oatmeal-Pecan Cookies

My husband's Aunt Christine used to make these when she worked at Lower Creek Elementary and our daughter would always be looking for her great-aunt and these cookies at lunchtime!

I'm sharing my recipe, Streamers, because this is the one I've been making for days to give away to neighbors and friends for the holiday season.  Merry Christmas!

Fudge Oatmeal-Pecan Cookies

1 cup sugar

1/2 cup milk

2 tablespoons cocoa

1 stick butter

Combine above ingredients in a pan on the stove. Stir to mix good and bring to a boil.

After coming to a rolling boil, time it for 2 1/2 minutes. Remove from heat.

Add 1 teaspoon of vanilla, stir.

Add 2 1/2 cups of minute oats

And 1/2 cup chopped pecans

(or any nuts or 1/2 cup peanut butter)

Beat together for 1 minute. Spoon by teaspoon onto waxed paper and let cool.

Makes about 24 cookies. Store in tightly closed container.

Friday's Five Holiday Bugaboos, Part 3

1. What really upsets me at this time of year, is people stealing from organizations helping needy families. Recently, I heard of two churches being broken into and toys collected for children being stolen. And another church had thirty hams for families taken. It's sad and is the very opposite of the meaning of Christmas.

2. How about all those yummy foods that only appear during the holidays? Then they're gone! I guess I'd weigh a ton if they were available year-round.

3. If you stand under plastic mistletoe, do you get air kisses? Or fake kisses? Do they count as real kisses? Just wondering.

4. The other day, I bought lots at a big stuff-mart. My husband unpacked the bags when I got home. The next day I couldn't find things I had purchased, so I checked over my list and found seven items that didn't make it home with me! Now I gotta go back and do some sweet-talking to get what I paid for a few days ago.

5. If you no longer believe in Santa Claus, does that mean there is less magic in the world? Perhaps, but I think not --- because we give gifts to the needy and to loved ones and so the spirit of giving lives on in us.

Have a very Merry Christmas, Streamers!!! ~~~ Happy Holiday Hugs, Rita
