Lately, I've encountered three wise women who made me think a little deeper about my life. Two are famous, one is not.
Some of you may have seen the recent Oprah show where Kirstie Alley, 55 years old, flashed the world in a bikini. That wasn't what impressed me as much as in what she said about women never thinking they're good enough. "We don't feel like we're thin enough or pretty enough or smart enough or work hard enough." Kirstie knows what she's talking about after living through being the butt of fat jokes worldwide! "Come on, we are all good enough. And we look good enough. And we are not our bodies." Thank you, Kirstie! This week's Life Magazine's interview with Kristie was very insightful too.
(Years ago, when I was young, thin and adequate in the looks department, I STILL thought I wasn't good enough. I actually thought I was fat with no style. I wasn't, of course, and looking back at those images, I now know I must have been out of my mind!!! So young and old women everywhere --- enjoy yourself and forget about those impossible standards set by the media and outside influences.)
Sally Field has always been remarkable and at age 60, she continues to impress me and others with her class. Parade Magazine last week published a question about Sally which quoted a few of her pearls of wisdom about being who she is now. "I'm not going to fake it." she says. Sally says she is who she is and "I'd rather be droopy" than have plastic surgery. "There comes a time when you look bizarre," says the grandmother of three. Good for you for keeping it real, Sally!
(Every time I consider plastic surgery, I send money to The Smile Train, an organization that repairs cleft lips and palates in children.)
The last lady is unknown to most, but nevertheless was an inspiration to me and others where I live. Our oldest hospital volunteer, Marie Cowan, age 99, died last week while I was on vacation. She was always wearing a smile while greeting visitors at the information desk at the front door of the hospital. She was extremely active to the very end. Many of us admired her energy and strength of purpose.
(That's how I want to go out --- smiling and happy with myself! ~~~ Hugs, Rita B)
