Momma Never Told Me

 Three Wise Women

Lately, I've encountered three wise women who made me think a little deeper about my life. Two are famous, one is not.

Some of you may have seen the recent Oprah show where Kirstie Alley, 55 years old, flashed the world in a bikini. That wasn't what impressed me as much as in what she said about women never thinking they're good enough. "We don't feel like we're thin enough or pretty enough or smart enough or work hard enough." Kirstie knows what she's talking about after living through being the butt of fat jokes worldwide! "Come on, we are all good enough. And we look good enough. And we are not our bodies." Thank you, Kirstie! This week's Life Magazine's interview with Kristie was very insightful too.

(Years ago, when I was young, thin and adequate in the looks department, I STILL thought I wasn't good enough. I actually thought I was fat with no style. I wasn't, of course, and looking back at those images, I now know I must have been out of my mind!!! So young and old women everywhere --- enjoy yourself and forget about those impossible standards set by the media and outside influences.)

Sally Field has always been remarkable and at age 60, she continues to impress me and others with her class. Parade Magazine last week published a question about Sally which quoted a few of her pearls of wisdom about being who she is now. "I'm not going to fake it." she says. Sally says she is who she is and "I'd rather be droopy" than have plastic surgery. "There comes a time when you look bizarre," says the grandmother of three. Good for you for keeping it real, Sally!

(Every time I consider plastic surgery, I send money to The Smile Train, an organization that repairs cleft lips and palates in children.)

The last lady is unknown to most, but nevertheless was an inspiration to me and others where I live. Our oldest hospital volunteer, Marie Cowan, age 99, died last week while I was on vacation. She was always wearing a smile while greeting visitors at the information desk at the front door of the hospital. She was extremely active to the very end. Many of us admired her energy and strength of purpose.

(That's how I want to go out --- smiling and happy with myself! ~~~ Hugs, Rita B)

 Breaking Fate?

Fate changed last night when I threw my hairbrush under the sink --- I broke my hand mirror into four clean-edged pieces!

I noticed no immediate break from my previous path to my destined fate because I went to bed, slept, innocently unknowing what had happened in that flick of my wrist.

The next morning, when I saw my broken mirror, I knew instinctively what it meant. Seven years of bad hair days! Since this mirror was the one used for checking the back of my head for clumps and bumps of matted hair, the logical conclusion has to be connected to my future hair-dos. Right?

Don't laugh yet --- "hair kismet" is serious stuff --- all I have to do is work extra hard to make my head of hair behave and check for ways to avoid follicle disaster. Like generously tip my hairdresser? Maybeeeeeeeee.

Just in case this plan is faulty, I went to the internet for help. That's where I found out that the American slaves averted bad luck by submerging the broken mirror pieces into a south-running STREAM! Any bad luck would be washed away. I like that idea and besides in the olden days, reflections in the water and in mirrors had a lot in common. It was thought that both could steal your soul.  Geeez, I've got enough problems!

So my idea is that seven days after posting this on the Stream, my southern good luck and healthy hair growth will be restored. Thankfully, with your blessings, I will be back to my original mission in life and on the road to success!
