 Litterbugging

Last Saturday, while stopped at a light, an enormous black SUV ahead opened the driver's door and threw out trash from a fast food restaurant! We exchanged shrugs with the people in the car next to us and I wrote down the driver's license number of the North Carolina tag. With our town built around two interstates, we often get travelers riding in and out. Most stop for gas or food before they return to the interstate.

By the time I got even with her car, the young blond woman turned onto the I-40 ramp heading south. I tried to get her to look so I could flash her the Italian "whatsa matter you?" sign, but she was too busy looking down --- probably finishing her meal! It made us furious that a visitor would dump trash on our main street and exit without a thought to who would have to clean up after her littering.

As we continued uptown, my husband said we should have picked it up, knocked on her car window, and given it back to her with a cheery, "You dropped this!" I wish we had thought of it sooner! It's a great idea and I would have done it too --- I was in that kind of mood. So, Streamers, if you ever read about a woman being shot while running down the highway trying to stuff trash back into some litterbugger's car window. That would be me!

 Into the Fire

As you know, if you read my blog, I like to tell about someone who has died that I want to recognize. Every time I read the obituary pages, I can't ignore the section listing the military service people who have died during the current wars around the world. There's always a too-long listing, usually with photos, of all the young people who have died in another country, fighting for some nation's freedom. The ages range from teens and into the 40's. It breaks my heart. These people have given their lives in service of our country. Not to even mention the ones who return home wounded and maimed. Since I was in the Navy, I know what boot camp and some of the other grueling physical tests the military puts their people through to prepare them for survival. It is far worse to be on the front lines in the heat of action. The bravery of our men and women amazes me daily! How can someone face it and not flinch and run away. It's like the definition of a firemen --- people who run INTO a burning building when everyone else is running out! Because of this bravery, our nation has remained safe. Each day we go about our lives without much thought to the freedoms we enjoy. The horrors many see and the discomforts they must endure are unbelievable. It all seems so far away when we see it on TV or read about what's happening. But I want to make myself remember what commitment some of our countrymen and women have dedicated their lives to for our continued freedom.

It Smells Like Friday Fun Facts

Inhaling deeply of fragrant foods will stop you from over-eating? That made me think of some of my favorite smells and why I like them. There is power in pleasing scents!

1. Cinnamon is one of those spices I enjoy in candies and many foods. I heard once that men are really turned on by the pumpkin pie smell! You've got to be kidding about the fruity squash --- it must be the cinnamon --- that woody scent used in pies and other cooking. In the olden days women would dab vanilla behind their ears for perfume! Maybe the way to a man's heart IS through his stomach with a spicy pie!

2. Gardenias are my favorite flowers, but only because of the sweet bouquet they give. The white flower is rather delicate for doing much with other than enjoying visually for a few days before it turns brown. My usual cologne is Island Gardenia by Jovan --- inexpensive for sure --- but I have tried many other gardenia fragrances and none compare for its lasting, but light, natural smell. Luckily, my husband like it too.

3. Oranges are always around us and I never really thought about their tangy scent until our trek through Florida a few years ago. There I fell in love with smelling oranges! They were everywhere and I never got sick of it --- instead I wanted more. So when I returned home, I started searching out products with the orange smell, and now there are more of them today. My absolute favorite of the room sprays is Pure Citrus Orange Air Refreshner. It covers every odor known to man! And beast! Try it, you'll like it.

4. Popcorn makes me think of sitting on the sofa watching TV when I was a kid and, of course, going to the movies! Unfortunately, we all know that movie popcorn is the worst thing we can do to our bodies, but oh, it's so good. There oughta be a law! Now there's so many choices for popping corn at home --- some excellent and some terrible tasting --- but none can compare to the smell of melted butter in a heavy iron pan with a lid, and shaking your arm off until the last kernal explodes! It's greasy and great. Microwave popcorn is pretty good. Nothing smells as good as popcorn and nothing smells worse than burnt popcorn!

5. Steak on the grill is unmistakable delicious. My mouth waters before I get to eat a taste of it because of the aroma of the cooking beef. That's how I know I could never, ever, be a vegetarian. I've thought about it, but then put me at a cookout and would all be over quick! I'd be scarfing down chunks of that hot sizzling meat. So what's for dinner?

Each Streamer could probably come up with a totally different list of smells, scents, aromas, and fragrances. To each his or her own --- this is mine and I own it!
