Momma Never Told Me

Because of You - Kelly Clarkson

I will not make the same mistakes that you did
I will not let myself
Cause my heart so much misery
I will not break the way you did,
you fell so hard
I've learned the hard way
To never let it get that far

Because of you
I never stray too far from the sidewalk
Because of you
I learned to play on the safe side so I don't get hurt
Because of you
I find it hard to trust not only me, but everyone around me
Because of you
I am afraid

I lose my way
And it's not too long before you point it out
I cannot cry
Because I know that's weakness in your eyes
I'm forced to fake
A smile, a laugh everyday of my life
My heart can't possibly break
When it wasn't even whole to start with

Because of you
I never stray too far from the sidewalk
Because of you
I learned to play on the safe side so I don't get hurt
Because of you
I find it hard to trust not only me, but everyone around me
Because of you
I am afraid

I watched you die
I heard you cry every night in your sleep
I was so young
You should have known better than to lean on me
You never thought of anyone else
You just saw your pain
And now I cry in the middle of the night
For the same damn thing!

Because of you
I never stray too far from the sidewalk
Because of you
I learned to play on the safe side so I don't get hurt
Because of you
I tried my hardest just to forget everything
Because of you
I don't know how to let anyone else in
Because of you
I'm ashamed of my life
because it's empty
Because of you
I am afraid

Because of you
Because of you

 Staying Safe

She had the audience hanging on her every breath as she blew them away at the Grammy ceremony! No, I'm not talking about Madonna blowing a hernia right there on stage in front of everybody, either.

Simon and I were disappointed when Kelly Clarkson didn't mention her rise from nowhere to success on American Idol. It was ignoring her fans who put her there. Like we would forget? I rarely watch American Idol and have never voted for any of the wanna-be stars, but it seems like a great way to discover hidden talent. We all know it takes a lot of machinery behind a person to make them a name in the business. In its short history, this program has had a few super novas and a few flame-outs. One of the problems being that some people overload the voting on their favorite, so the winner isn't always how the majority feels. And, if anything, selling music is about numbers. A musician must have enough fans to make the journey worthwhile.

Watching Kelly sing that night made me more intrigued by one of her current hits, "Because of You." I had heard the song before and liked it immediately because of the obvious emotion expressed, thinking it was about how losing a first love had changed someone so they were playing it safe. But I was wrong!

"I will not break the way you did, you fell so hard, I've learned the hard way" or "Because of you, I learned to play on the safe side so I don't get hurt."

The lyrics take us in the opposite direction from the very beginning. It's the point of view of someone who BROKE someone else's heart! Most songs are from the person who has been hurt, the "heartbreakee," not the person doing the hurting, the "heartbreaker." The person breaking the heart usually doesn't give it another thought let alone sing passionately about it! Everyone has scars from loving and losing. The first cut is the deepest, right?

"Because of you, I find it hard to trust not only me, but everyone around me." Protecting one's heart has become a top priority "Because of you, I am afraid" to love.

Kelly's vocal dynamics in this song has enough strength and compassion to handle the power of its beauty --- or the beauty of its power. She is a talented singer with tremendous range. That puts her in a category with only a few female divas strutting their stuff these days. Another amazing thing is, she is one of the composers of this song, so maybe she's lived some of the words? That always makes a difference in performing. Her voice has matured with confidence, as well as been polished to perfection by the well-oiled music machine.

All one has to do is check out her current Breakaway CD for the hits --- Breakaway, Walk Away, Since U Been Gone, Behind Hazel Eyes, Because of You --- all songs with impact. Rarely on any CD does the buyer get more that one or two memorable songs on it. In my opinion, she's the best of the American Idol discoveries, worth watching, and now the show is counting down to another winner. ~~~ Feel the music ~~~ Rita B

 Getting Dirty for God

The Sunday after Easter is know as "Low Sunday" in most churches because attendance is way off. Because of this our church has had a "Service Sunday" for the last ten years. It is an amazing day where we all come dressed for dirty work and then go out into the community doing projects. First we meet in the sanctuary --- arrayed in shorts, painting clothes and other appropriate work attire --- and have a service about helping others followed by a lunch. And then off we go to various job assignments we've signed up for over the last few weeks.

All ages are involved --- like the youngest planted flowers outside the entrance of the Sunday School building. A huge team went to the Disaster Relief Center to pack disaster kits; some painted, cleaned and planted at the Life Span Center for handicapped children; some children packed health kits for the homeless shelters; some delivered meals, and on and on the list goes. We used to go back to the church for a dinner and to hear how everybody did, but last year it was noticed people were tired and most headed home!

My team worked around a senior apartment complex next to our church. There were about 12 of us who labored over three hours digging out ugly stuff --- monkey grass! --- and replanting all the areas with bright blooming flowers and some shade loving plants under the trees along the street. Since it was "Earth Day" weekend, we tried to save as much as possible. With the residents so very appreciative, my past Sunday was well-spent!

The world is the theater of God's glory! Earth Day is important because we need to recognize the beauty of creation and protect the environment we have dominion over.

 Happy Earth Day!

To be the earth is to know
the restlessness of being a seed
the darkness of being planted
the struggle toward the light
the pain of growth into the light
the joy of bursting forth and bearing fruit
the love of being food for someone
the scattering of your seeds
the decay of the seasons
the mystery of death
and the miracle of birth.

This beautiful poem is written by John Soos and is from the book, Earth Prayers From Around the World.

Do something nice for the earth today, even if it's in your own yard! Sometimes the best opportunities are within arm's reach. ~~~ Cyberhugs, Rita B

"I Am" Just the Friday Facts, Ma'am

1. I am really disappointed to hear that Hooters Airlines is closing down before I get a chance to travel their friendly, well-padded skies. Apparently, they just didn't have enough support.

2. I am not a fan of restaurants with giant buffets. If you want to catch the latest "bug" going around then that's the place to be. My mom told me once of being at a self-serve buffet and seeing a young child playing in the pudding with its hands! Yikes!! I think of that every time I end up at one of those gastronomic killers. Plus everyone eats too much.

3. I am allergic to the fruit of the vine. Right after my husband retired we started visiting all the wineries in our state and then surrounding states. It was great fun! Some of them are in the basement of people's homes and some have fancy productions around the ritual of drinking their best wines, even festivals. We drank wine, we bought wine, we bought glasses, we read about the history of wine --- yes, we enjoyed it all! I actually found a few wines I liked, but most of the time I thought it didn't agree with me. I was right too, because after the first year I found out I was very allergic to grapes! Buh-bye, wine.

4. I am a fan of live theater. Ever since a date in high school took me to a play, I have enjoyed seeing live theater. It always has an element of the unexpected in it! Luckily, my husband enjoys live productions too. A couple of weeks ago we went to see The Vagina Monologues and it was quite a humorous shocker seeing women, some we know, saying the words in that play, especially the grandmother types! Whoa, momma.

5. I am a pretty decent billiard player. The more I play the better I get, but my oldest sister is better than I am. Since we have a table, my husband has been teaching our granddaughters. They both started out on top of the table! He even cut down cue sticks for them. Now the oldest granddaughter is very good at tricky shots. I still have my moments, and occasionally let them win, but I suspect they'll both pass me by after starting out so young. My husband, the math major, is quite good so they've had a great teacher.

Here we are at our favorite day of the week, Streamers. Have a wonderful Friday! ~~~ Hugs, Rita B
